UPDATE 2:
This is the latest being reported:

"At this point, as best as we can determine, the infant died through suffocation at the hands of the mother," Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Pat Nelson said. "After her third or fourth version of events, we knew she wasn't telling the truth."

Detectives arrested Barker last Thursday because of "indications she might flee or disappear," Nelson said.

Katfishponders first reported here about this sweet little girl named Emma Leigh Barker about a month ago when she went missing. This video is from that time.

Emma's mother, Stacey Barker,24, was arrested today, Thursday, April 23 on suspicion of her daughter's murder.

Barker initially told deputies her daughter, 18-month-old Emma, was abducted from her car in the parking lot of a Lancaster, CA park on March 18th. She claimed she was knocked out by the kidnapper and woke up six hours later, several miles away at the Palmdale Park-n-Ride.
Detectives said Barker had injuries consistent with a struggle, including bruises on her head and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Barker later admitted making up the abduction story. She said the little girl died accidentally, causing her to panic and leave the girl's body near the freeway.

The child's body was found 12 hours later, dumped in a grassy lot near the Golden State Freeway in Sylmar, CA. Authorities said it appeared the girl's 25-pound body had been dumped sometime over the last 24 hours and showed no visible signs of trauma.

The results of an autopsy on child have not been disclosed, although the coroner could not determine the cause of death from the initial autopsy.

Barker was arrested at a home in Lancaster where she and Emma lived with her parents and brother. She is being held on $1 Million bail and is expected to be arraigned Monday, April 27.

  1. Huckaby's daughter was out of town at the time of Sandra's kidnapping...so in light of the other incident thats come out involving Huckaby and another girl in January, I think its very likely Huckaby drugged a drink she gave Sandra in order to molest her w/o Sandra remembering it, but must have given her too much and Sandra died, much to her surprise. Huckaby did work in the medical field so she probably felt knowledgeable/comfortable using the benzo for her purposes.

So Huckaby 'accidentally' murdered Sandra, freaked out/stuffed her in a suitcase and threw her in a pit of manuer so nobody could smell the girls body but all that was probably not premeditated (cuz it reeks of poor planning) - thats why she is crying in court and tried to kill herself.

She could maybe live with herself as a molester, but not as a child killer.

I think all this was brought on by her arrest for shop lifting. Public admonishment by the justice system can be psychologically hard/embarrassing on someone who views themselves as moral. Its sort of like if one thing goes out the window, everything goes out the window. They feel that if they are 'bad' people, then they are really a lower form of human and thus start behaving like so.

  2. Thank you for the comment Jeff. That is certainly one possible explanation and reflects a lot of thought.
I think in many states the scenerio of drugging a child to perform a felony act (child molestation or child abuse) is still considered first-degree murder, ie. felony murder.

I will never understand how a mother could dump her child to the side of the road like so much trash as Stacey Barker or Casey Anthony are accused, regardless of the cause of death. To me that is the epitamy of selfishness.

  4. The vision of this beautiful child will forever haunt me. I have two daughters, 3 and 6, and every time I hear a story like Emma's... or any other little girl who's life was cut short, I hug my girls a little tighter and a little longer. As I look into my little girls faces, I can't imagine the evil that could cause a person to harm such innocence. I just don't get it. Perhaps now, these little girls who's life was cut short are not angels who will try to protect other little girls. So sad... Emma rest in peace.

  5. Kim and Laura- Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Emma was indeed a beautiful child and is surely dancing in heaven with the other angels whose lives were cut short as well. There seems to be so many of these horrible cases. It's not understandable, just sad.

  8. Hello Tootsie!
This story has had very little coverage. I suspect LE had to wait for toxicology or some other tests and do more investigation before they could make an srrest. The results of the autopsy are sealed by the request of LE.

  9. katfish,

Depending on where this case ends up, I may follow it.

  10. Sprocket,
This would be a good case to follow. There is a lot of interest which is a little surprising given the lack of media coverage.

  11. Sprocket, I really wish you would follow it! I am baffled by the lack of coverage from the local media. This case has so many similarities to Caylee's case. I have been emailing local media for weeks and also Nancy Grace and was happy to see that she gave it some national attention. For heaven sakes, no local media showed up for Stacey's May 11 court date! Unbelievable! I have been emailing some of the local media asking them to please show up on June 15. Thank you, katfish, for covering this. Sweet Emma Leigh deserves the attention. Cat

  12. I agree Cat this would be a great case for Sprocket to cover. I have been covering this case since March and it's difficult to find any coverage in the mainstream media. RIP EMMA!
